Excerpt

“When I was a little girl, someone gave me a kitschy plastic “snow globe”—the kind that has a clear front and a blue back to look like the sky. The globe’s scene included a house with a tree beside it and a disproportionately large animal that was indistinguishable as a deer, except for the antlers protruding from the top of its head. When I shook it, bits of glittery plastic swirled around, “snowing” on the scene. The snow tumbled and settled on the figures.

After a few shakes, the deer became dislodged, and it too would tumble around in the “blizzard,” landing on its side or on top of the house, where it would rest for only a second before sliding to the yard. Eventually, the tree and house also became unglued. With each shake, the pieces would spin and topple before landing haphazardly, never quite going back to the calm, idyllic scene it had first evoked. No matter where they came to rest, the scene was never the same. A new reality followed the mayhem created by the globe’s movement.

Over the span of twelve months, my world shifted and changed dramatically, and I felt like I was inside that snow globe. The pieces came unglued, twirled around, and settled in new and unique positions. I could not have anticipated the events, nor could I have predicted that they would become the catalyst to change the carefully constructed trajectory I was on. Several seemingly unconnected events moved me off my well-thought-out plan.

I had an image of who I would be in my next phase of life. I was intentional and deliberate in my preparation. As I should have learned from past experience, the Universe often has a way of shaking up well-made plans.”

Early Praise

Mothers and Others: My Search for Home is one of those rare books that invites you into someone else’s story and somehow leaves you seeing your own more clearly.

Lucinda Wayland Connelly writes with extraordinary honesty, vulnerability, and courage. She shares the twists and turns of her journey with such openness that I often found myself forgetting that I was reading a memoir and feeling as though I was walking alongside her. Through heartbreak, uncertainty, resilience, and discovery, she takes readers on a deeply moving search for identity, belonging, and home.

What touched me most was her willingness to explore not only what happened to her, but how those experiences shaped the woman she became. Her reflections on childhood are thoughtful and insightful, offering a powerful reminder that our earliest experiences often influence us in ways that we may not fully understand until much later in life. Equally compelling are her experiences in the Navy and her honest examination of the challenges she faced as a woman serving in a culture that was not always welcoming or supportive.

As I read, I found myself reflecting on my own life. Her story prompted me to revisit memories, re-examine some of the stories I have told myself over the years, and consider the armor I built to protect myself through difficult seasons. It reminded me that sometimes the stories we carry are incomplete and that there is wisdom to be found when we are willing to look at them through a different lens.

Perhaps the greatest gift this book gave me was the inspiration to finish writing my own memoir. Lucinda’s courage in examine her life with such honesty encourages me to do the same. Her story reminded me that our experiences matter, and that there is value in understanding not only what happened to us, but how those experiences shaped our beliefs, our choices, and ultimately our lives.

I closed the final chapter with deep admiration for Lucinda and gratitude that she chose to share her story with the world. Mothers and Others: My Search for Home is a beautiful, heartfelt memoir about resilience, self-discovery, and the lifelong search for where we belong. It is a book that will stay with me for a long time, and one I wholeheartedly recommend.
